Well folks, Proposition 4 appears to be a failure. About 58 percent of voters who turned out for the Mat-Su Borough general election Tuesday darkened the ‘no’ circle under Prop. 4 which, with approval, would have brought turf fields to three area high schools and synthetic tracks to five Mat-Su schools.
See the Friday edition of the Frontiersman for reaction, but until then, here are some numbers for you to chomp on. Don’t forget these are the numbers that were available Wednesday afternoon. They could change slightly, but not enough to improve facilities at our local schools.
• Of the 10,377 registered voters who cast a ballot, 4,446 voted yes and another 5,931 said no.
• Only five of the Valley’s 34 voting precincts produced winning margins for Prop. 4 — Springer, Palmer No. 1, Palmer No. 2, Wasilla No. 2 and Talkeetna.
• The biggest margin of victory came in Talkeetna, were 57 percent of voters said yes. That makes sense, considering part of the proposition include a hockey rink, outdoor basketball court and warming building for Susitna Valley High School.
• The largest defeat, 72 percent no, came in the Sheep Mountain precinct. About 69 percent of voter said no in the Big Lake and Meadow Lakes No. 2 precincts.
• More than 40 percent said yes in 20 precincts.
