On June 24, the Alaska Scottish Highland Games will take place at the Alaska State Fairgrounds. Scottish Highland professionals and local amateur athletes will perform traditional Scottish feats of strength. There will also be an array of Celtic music with solo pipers and drummers in the morning and a band competition in the afternoon.
Highland games are events typically held in the spring and summer in Scotland. It has spread to other countries and made its way to Alaska. Coordinated by the efforts of the Alaskan Scottish Club, the event celebrates Scottish and Celtic culture, especially that of the Scottish Highlands.
This year will also feature guests, Grade 2 Pipe Band from San Diego. They will be performing throughout the day. Other activities include the Kilted Mile, children’s events, an assortment of Celtic dancing demonstrations and the Tall Tales on the small stage in the Celtic Village. There will Celtic crafts sold by vendors of different clans. The Scotch Tasting event has returned with two sessions and one educational session. The Ceilidh band this year is AnGry Brians. They will be performing at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. on the main stage.
