God’s greatest gift to us is His Word. Both the Bible and Jesus are referred to as “the Word of God.” The Bible is God’s greatest gift because through it we learn about Him and how to live in loving relationship with Him. It teaches us about our need for salvation and God’s plan for our redemption.
The Bible is not an inanimate object created by men. Hebrews 4:12 tells us, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” The Bible is active in the life of those who study it. It instructs us in path of salvation and sanctification (how to live as Christians and growth in faith and righteousness).
2 Timothy 3:16 teaches us that, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Teaching: instructs us on what is right. Reproof: tells us what is not right. Correction: informs us on how to get right. Training in righteousness: ensure that we continue to do right.
The supernatural origin of the Bible is further detailed by the Apostle Peter who explained that it was written as, “men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). Because of this we can be assured that, “we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty” (2 Peter 1:16).
Psalm 119 extolls the accuracy, authority and truth of God’s Word, “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.” (Psalm 119:160). Jesus also confirmed the accuracy and authenticity of the Scriptures. Jesus prayed to the Father for His disciples throughout all generations that Yehovah would, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” (John 17:17)
We must not only read the Bible but obey what it teaches – we must be doers of the Word. “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves (James 1:22).
Finally, Jesus said ““Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” (Matthew 7:24-27).
