There’s a reason why some kids don’t like school

Disturbed parents contacted the Frontiersman this week about two incidents that seem alarming at the least.

First, the parents of a Colony High School student came in to say their daughter had been accosted by a boy while in school. The parents said he groped her, hugged her and tried to kiss her, all without her permission. Finally, the parents said, and the school discipline reports agrees, she stabbed him with a pen or pencil and punched him a couple of times.

The girl is on some kind of in-house detention. The boy, the parents say, is free to go as he pleases.

The parents have no qualms about their daughter being punished, but wonder why the boy isn’t.

Clearly, on the discipline report, the boy tried to kiss and hug the girl all the while she was telling him, “No.”

Now, this is only one side of the story, but the school’s own form acknowledges the boy’s misbehavior.

So why isn’t he being punished, and likely in need of some counseling?

The second incident happened on a school bus.

A father called in after learning his daughter was late getting off the bus.

The reason: Apparently a student on the bus had to be taken off the ride because he threatened to kill all the other students aboard.

Perhaps this could be chalked up to childish hyperbole, but if it warranted the student to be evicted from the bus, then it must be serious. And the parent on the other end of the line sure was taking it seriously. What parent wouldn’t?

At the very least, somebody at Wasilla Middle School should meet with this student and learn the problem. Maybe all the other students on the bus were taunting him or her and frustration came out. Or maybe, there are some serious issues with this child that need immediate attention.

Of course the Frontiersman can’t verify the whole story in either case because the school district stonewalls any questions about students, and First Student bus company is just as bad.

Many will recall their frustration last school year when a moose was either harassed to death by students on school grounds, or the calf simply committed ungulate suicide. Nobody ever knew the truth because school people simply don’t like to discuss those things.

And no charges were filed by authorities. A dead end, so to speak.
