HOUSTON — A high school student may have won the race, but most of his competition consisted of older adults.
Christopher Smith, of the 13- to 19-year-old age group, won the 13-mile race in a time of 1:28:52 on Saturday, Sept. 20. David Shipley, in the 20-29 age bracket took second place about nine minutes later, and Tana Luna, in the 30-39 age group, placed third overall, first for women in 1:45:29.
Of the 40 individuals who participated, 17 were in the 30-39 age group, nine in the 50-59 age group, eight in the 40-49 age group, five in the 20-29 age group, and Smith was the only runner under age 19.
Thirteen relay teams competed in the event, six of which were two-person relays, as opposed to the seven three-person relays.
The Macdonald relay team had the third-fastest time overall in the event, clocking in at 1:44:12, but “Scrambled Legs” may have won the imaginary award of most creative team name.
