Visitors to the first day of the Alaska State Fair were treated to absolutely picture-perfect weather on Friday.
“This is a world-class fair with a very local, Alaska feel, and as I walk around, I see it. I think that’s really, really important” said Jeff Curtis, the CEO of the Alaska State Fair. He also thought it was important to remind people that the Alaska State Fair is a not-for-profit, making it a unique feature when comparing it to other state fairs.
“This is your fair, and that’s something that’s a tradition that I take seriously,” said Curtis.
This year, with 500 vendors and booths open, including plenty of storefronts and local artisans with their wares ready to go, there is something for everyone.
Exhibits are ready for viewing as crafters, artists, and growers and agricultural displays from around the state show off their best work to the thousands that walked through the 3 different exhibition halls.
There were goats to bring smiles to little kids, and big ones too, as well as pony rides and a kiss-a-pig booth, and rides, too. Friday didn’t offer a concert, but over at the Global Credit Union Bluebonnet Theater, the duo, Forever Simon and Garfunkel, provide music to lift the spirits of those taking a break from all the fair has to offer.
And of course, what would the state fair be without the food? From the iconic turkey legs and pulled pork sandwiches to oysters and crab cakes; elephant ears, giant bags of cotton candy and kettle korn, and cuisine from around the world is available.
“It’s about bringing people together from all walks of life. Families create memories together. And that’s what you have here on a grand scale.”
The Alaska State Fair runs from Friday, Aug. 18 through Monday, Sep. 4 with Tuesdays and Wednesdays closed for vendors to take a break and restock. Gates open daily at 11 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. and this year general parking is free.
