To the editor:
This is an open letter to the residents of Houston:
I would like to urge the voters of Houston to vote “no” July 26 in the recall election against Mayor Virgie Thompson.
Mayor Thompson has been a valuable member of Houston City Council since 2008, and since being elected Mayor in October 2010, Thompson has proven to be a strong leader and has helped navigate the city of Houston back into a positive direction.
Under the leadership of Mayor Thompson (and with assistance from state Senator Neuman’s office) the city of Houston has received a grant from the state of Alaska for $425,000 for a new tanker truck for the fire department and also received a grant for $56,000 for a road grader for the roads department.
For the first time in Houston’s history a reserve account is being funded in order for the city to have money set aside for emergencies and unforeseen events. In the past, these funds had been taken away by other city departments and projects.
Mayor Thompson is a true asset to our city. She cares about the people, she wants to see Houston change for the better and she is working hard with the current council to ensure that this happens.
I fully support Mayor Virgie Thompson and will be voting “no” on July 26. I ask the voters of Houston to do the same.
You don’t need to wait until July 26 to vote. You can vote in person at city hall any weekday from now until July 26 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. On July 26, the polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
