Visitors walk among the old mining buildings at the Independence Mine State Historical Park Saturday afternoon during the park’s 30th anniversary celebration.

In January 1951, after mining nearly $6 million worth of gold, Independence Mine was closed by Alaska-Pacific Consolidated Mining Co. In 1974, Independence Mine was entered into the National Register of Historic Places. In the late 1970s, 271 acres of land were donated to the Alaska Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation to establish Independence Mine State Historical Park. On Jan. 16, 1980, title to the acreage was transferred to the state of Alaska.
