Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

BOSTON, Mass. — Three Mat-Su Valley runners finished the 114th Boston Marathon Monday in Boston, Mass.
Wasilla’s David Johnston, Big Lake’s Rob Hutchison and Palmer’s Karen Looney each completed the 26.2-mile course that leads runners to Copley Square, deep into the heart of historic Boston.
Johnston, running in his sixth Boston Marathon, finished with a time of 3 hours, 15 minutes and 14 seconds. The 40-year-old finished 3,610th among the more than 26,000 who entered the race. He was 596th in his age division.
Johnston bettered his 2009 finish by more than 2,000 spots in the standings. His time was more than nine minutes better than his 2009 mark and six minutes faster than his 2008 time.
Johnston was also the eighth of 57 Alaskans to cross the finish line.
Hutchison, another regular in the race, finished with a time of 3:51:50 and was part of the top 14,000 runners in the race. Looney recorded a time of 4:33:19.
Tom Ritchie, a wrestling coach at South Anchorage High School, was the first Alaskan to cross the finish line, recording a mark of 2:36:40. He finished 137th overall. Megan Lehmann of Sitka was the first Alaska woman to hit 26.2 miles, posting a time of 3:21:07.
According the Associated Press, the temperate was 49 degrees and there was a 13 mph headwind at the start of the race.
