Matanuska Peak (also known as Byers Peak) is a 6,119-foot mountain that towers over the city of Palmer and the Matanuska Valley. The trail to the top takes hikers along a 5.5-mile trail that gains more than 5,500 feet in elevation. The trail winds through thick forest for the first two miles before breaking out into alpine tundra. The final ridgeline to the top is steep and requires good footwear, but technical climbing gear is not required.

This all-day hike provides spectacular views of the Chugach and Talkeetna mountains as well as the Matanuska and Knik River Valleys and beyond to Cook Inlet. To reach the trailhead, drive to the end of Smith Road in the Butte. Be aware of changing weather, as conditions high in the mountains can vary dramatically from those closer to town.
