Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

FAIRBANKS — When John Knowles was a sophomore he finished third in the Northern Lights Conference in the shot put. That’s when Knowles began to think he just might have a future throwing the shot put and discus. Now, Knowles stands as Alaska’s undisputed king of the throws.
On Saturday, the Wasilla High senior completed his state championships sweep of the throwing events by winning the 4A discus title during the ASAA/First National Bank State Track and Field Championships at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks.
“I’ve been very happy with what I’ve been able to accomplish,” Knowles said by cell phone as he was on his way back to Wasilla Saturday evening. “It started my sophomore year. That kind of set it off. I progressed, got a little better here and a little better there.”
Knowles, who is unmistakable in the throwing circle with his 6-foot-8 frame, has been the man to beat the last two seasons. He captured Northern Lights Conference titles in both the shot and the discus as a junior and senior. He entered the 2010 state meet as the defending champ in the shot put, and capped his prep career with a pair of wins over the weekend.
“It felt good, I’m really excited,” Knowles said.
On Friday, Knowles won his second straight shot put title with a throw of 50 feet, 8 1/4 inches. The mark was just under his season best of 50-11.5, but Knowles said his goal was to simply break 50 feet in the event.
Knowles actually entered the final round with the third-best throw. Both Bartlett’s Tim Dommek and Dimond’s Mitchell Swensen had better marks during the preliminaries. But Knowles came through when it mattered.
Knowles’ biggest competition was Dommek, who finished second at 50-4.
“We were all pulling for (Tim),” Knowles said. “He came out of nowhere.”
Knowles used a throw of 148-10 to win the discus. The mark was 20 feet off his season high, but enough to win on Saturday.
“I threw what I needed to do to win, thankfully,” Knowles said.
Knowles’ efforts were part of the Valley’s clean sweep of the 4A throwing events. Houston senior Danielle Barney won the girls’ discus and Colony junior Shellina Irwin finished first in the shot put.
Barney’s win is a historic victory. Her throw of 108-4 gave Houston its first state track and field title in school history.
Houston Activities Director Norm Bouchard, who coached Barney through her junior season, said it’s a great win for the athlete and the school.
“It puts Houston on the map. People recognize who we are. We’re small, but we’re not just sending kids to state. We’re putting kids there who are competing,” Bouchard said. “It’s great for her as much as anything. For her, she’s a young lady who has worked her tail off for four years. She’s gotten to the point where now she can say she’s the best thrower in the state of Alaska.”
Barney actually battled with Irwin, the winner of the shot put, for the discus title. Barney entered the final round with the fifth-best throw of the preliminaries, a mark of 99-3. Irwin qualified with a 97-7.
On the first of three throws during the finals, Barney and Irwin both hit 103-11. That mark proved to be Irwin’s best of the day, but on Barney’s final attempt, she hit 108-4.
Irwin finished second in the discus, but led throughout the shot put event. Irwin entered the final round leading, and used a throw of 35-9 1/2 to win the event. Her mark was more than a foot better than second-place Zoe Kurth of West Valley.
After winning the NLC title in the shot put last week, Irwin said her coach agreed to treat her to a steak dinner if she hit her goal of 36-6. Irwin missed that mark, but did become just the third Colony thrower to win a state crown.
