High school seniors and proud parents throughout the Mat-Su Borough are excitedly getting ready for their high school graduations and planning the next steps in their lives. The Class of 2022 has gone through some profound changes in their 4 years, starting with the earthquake in November of 2018 that changed what school looked like for places such as Houston High, which had to absorb the Houston Middle School after structural damage to the building forced a permanent closure and the installation of dozens of portables to house the students and teachers.

Of course, education was forever changed after the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to go from in-person learning to on-line, which for many was a bumpy transition, which also meant many students would lose the joyful fun of a true snow day since learning can be done via Zoom.

Through it all, students have proven to be Alaska tough, overcoming Mother Nature and pandemics, preserving in the same tradition as generations before who’ve called Alaska home.

The Matanuska -Susitna Borough School District offers its congratulations to the graduates:

“This is an exciting time of year in Mat-Su, we have over 1,100 students graduating in the next two weeks! These students have spent 13 years preparing for this moment and they are ready to launch into the next phase of their life. We have students that will head off to apprenticeships, start post-secondary school in the fall, begin their military career, or even open their own business. We hope their experiences here have prepared them for success as they continue their journey. Congratulations to all the 2022 MSBSD graduates!”
