Timothy Alan McGhan died peacefully at home at Rocky Lake on February 3, 2024, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Lindsey, his sons Ryan and Corey, and his grandchildren Connor, Kinley, and Duncan.
Tim was born on 04/12/1950. He graduated from West High School in 1968, where he met the love of his life Lindsey. After joining the Marines, Tim returned to Anchorage and got married.
He worked for the Borough of Anchorage for several years, before relocating his young family to Big Lake in 1979.
Tim and Lindsey owned McGhan Construction Company, and later Big Lake Storage, one of the longest operating businesses in Big Lake. Tim was deeply involved in the community, including Lions Club, Big Lake Chamber of Commerce and youth hockey. He was quick to help a neighbor in need, and his house was full of friends laughing at his legendary one liners. He was known as the Sheriff of Rocky Lake. He hosted the McGhan’s annual golf-on-ice tournament in April for many years.
Tim was a larger-than-life personality. He always told it straight, whether you wanted to hear it or not. His house was always a warm place for his kids’ friends to eat, sleep and enjoy. He was an active Alaskan who loved flying, snow machining, trail grooming, hunting and fishing with friends and family. Tim counted himself the richest (though not the wealthiest) man in the world as he loved living on the lake, his family and the many people in his life. He enjoyed RVing and spending time at his second home in Soap Lake, WA on a golf course near his siblings.
Tim always joked that he would check the obituaries each morning to see if he needed to go to work. We hope he is enjoying his time off.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at Big Lake Lions on March 24, 2024 from 2-5pm.
In lieu of flowers a donation to Big Lake Lions or organization would be appreciated. If attending please RSVP to mcghan@mtaonline.net
