Titans take Valley tourney

WASILLA -- The Teeland wrestlers were truly titanic as the squad advanced 11 athletes to the championship round and earned 130 total team points en route to winning the Valley Championships at Wasilla Middle School last Saturday.

Six Titan grapplers earned individual titles for Teeland. Mike Chaffin scored a 17-9 major decision over Wasilla Middle School's Mike Gonzalez to win the 115-pound title. The Teeland eighth-grader is undefeated this season. Andrew Vanasdoll pinned fellow Titan Bridger Vanness 3 minutes and 36 seconds into the match to win the 95-pound bracket. Aaron Boss scored consecutive pins for Teeland in the semifinal and final round en route to winning the title at 85 pounds.

Chris Crane (133), Todd Atwood (140) and Mike Lachet (148) also won titles for Teeland.

"We're not real deep, but have one tough kid at every weight class," Teeland coach Bill Booth said. "We have several good second string guys."

Palmer Junior Middle School earned second place with 109 total points. The Mini-Moose were led by champions Ken Loggins (80), Dan Applin (90), Mike Jester (110), Shanon Sawyer (160).

Wasilla earned third with 100 total points. The Braves were led by Domitric Makitrin, who won the 127-pound class.

Fourth-place Colony, who garnered 98 total points, had three individual champions. Levi Krueger (121), Zack Beauchamp (100) and Cody Vetter (105) each won titles.

Local middle school wrestlers are competing in the final tournament of the season this weekend, the Tanana Invitational in Fairbanks.
