Top-seeded Wasilla gets by Houston in first round of the Division I state hockey tourney

The top seed in the Division I state hockey tourney is moving forward.

The Wasilla Warriors held on to beat upset-minded Houston 4-3 during the first day of the ASAA/First National Cup Division I State Hockey Championships Thursday night at the Menard Arena in Wasilla.

Seventh-seeded Colony was also among the three Valley teams in the field, but suffered an 8-2 loss to South Anchorage earlier in the day.

Wasilla will face fourth-seeded West Anchorage Friday at 4 p.m. in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Colony plays Chugiak at 11 a,m., and Houston meets Service at 1:30 p.m.

Sayer Sanders, Mason Holler, Roman Holler and Austin Peterson each scored during Wasilla’s win over Houston. Daniel Matveev, Eric Preboski and Brody Richard scored for the Hawks.

Houston outshot Wasilla 26-27. Jacob Barcelona made 23 saves in the win. Houston’s Ari Burnside stopped 13 shots.

Houston won the Division II state championship last week, and was awarded the final spot on the Division I bracket.

Kaden Lynch and Carsen Lantto scored for the Knights during the Colony loss.
