HATCHER PASS - Are you ready to get geared up for a winter adventure? If you don't have gear, don't worry, because it is time for the Winter Trails Day event, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, at Mile 10.6 Hatcher Pass Road and on the upper mountain near Hatcher Pass Lodge.

The eighth annual outdoor event began as a way get people outside in the winter and try equipment and to encourage people to explore outdoor recreation opportunities. The event has grown from around 50 people in 2005 to more than 250 in 2010.

Along with growth in attendance, the variety of activities also has expanded. This year, attendees can enjoy free cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding and other favorite outdoors sports. There will also be an avalanche rescue beacon demonstration and a fat bike demonstration. And if one of your family members is of the four-legged variety, then you might want to attend a skijoring demonstration. The best part is if a participant does not have any gear, he or she can learn on loaned equipment.

With free parking at most of the Alaska State Park's areas, Winter Trails Day organizers will also help keep people warm with hot chocolate and warming barrels.
