Training day

Well, I had my first session with the personal trainer today, and I’m happy to report that I survived.

Overall, I feel pretty good.

I am definitely feeling the effects of the workout on certain muscle groups, muscles that I obviously have not used in years.

I’ll be meeting with the personal trainer, Krista, twice per week. And today was the day she got to see how out-of-shape I am.

She led me through some basic tests. I started on the treadmill, walking at a fast pace. Every three minutes she’d increase the incline on the machine, while tracking my heart rate. I did this for about 12 minutes, and reached a level 12 incline. My heart didn’t explode out of my chest, so that’s good news right?

It was then time to hit the floor for some push-ups and crunches.

This is when my abs started to burn.

Let’s just say it’s been a while since someone asked me to do sit-ups. While I am not exactly sure how long it’s been, I was probably wearing a helmet and shoulder pads at the time.

After the sit-ups, we headed into the AT&T Sports Center weight room for some strength testing. I was a little closer to my comfort zone in the weight room and did fairly decent on the leg press and bench press.

It actually felt fairly good to hit the bench press again.

From what she saw during the testing, Krista said working the core areas will be key for me. So, I have a feeling, I’ll be feeling those ab and lower back muscles quite a bit in the near future.

To cap the hour-long session, Krista showed me two more abdominal exercises.

This is when my abs really started to burn.

Working with the personal trainer for these next several weeks will be a nice luxury. Like most people, it’s probably something I couldn’t afford on a regular basis, so I’ll take advantage while I can.

One nice thing for me is having a professional available to help design a workout routine that’s suitable for me, and one that’s useful for my wife. I want to be able to take what I learn now and apply that to the future. Both Amber and I will also share tips and exercise we learn along the way.
