Tanaina fourth- and fifth-grade students help Wasilla city employee Larissa McMahill spread bark around a newly planted tree Monday morning as part of an Arbor Day celebration. Students worked with the city, Iditarod Historic Trail Alliance and the Bureau of Land Management to bring the Iditarod National Historic Trail to a 2-mile route from their school to the Dorothy Page Museum. Using Google Earth, GPS and working with the Bureau of Land Management students calculated that every mile of the historic trail equals just over 11 feet on their community trail.
