Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Valley runners captured three individual titles at the 2002 Region III Cross-Country Championship at Skyview High School Saturday.
Aaron Dickson of Palmer, Dominique Colberg of Colony and Linnea Pudwill of Houston each represented the Valley with individual titles.
For the fifth time this season, Aaron and brother Drew Dickson, finished 1-2 in a 4A boys' cross-country event. Aaron crossed the line at 16:44 and Drew followed closely behind, finishing at 16:53.
Colberg won the girls' 4A race. The Knight runner crossed the finish line at 19:19, just slightly ahead of Soldotna's Jessica Weimer.
Pudwill was the top performer in the girls' 3A race with a time of 20:54.
The Moose boys' finished second in the boys' 4A class with 54 points. Kodiak edged Palmer for first place.
Rory Egelus finished fifth for Palmer, to help the Moose gain their second place finish.
Colony's Peter Doner finished fourth in the boys' 4A race and teammate Rose Wise finished 11th.
Kasey Thompson was the top finisher for the Wasilla boys at 29th.
The Colony girls finished second with 76 points, in the 4A event, well behind first place Soldotna. Renee Foster (8th) also had a top 10 finish for the Knights.
The Palmer girls were led by Kathleen LaFrance who finished 10th.
Claire Warren was the top finisher for the Wasilla girls at 16th.
According to region guidelines, the top three teams in the region advance to the state championships and any runner in the top 15 who is not on one of the top three squads will earn a right to compete in the state championships.
The Palmer boys and Colony girls advanced to the state championships with their second place finishes.
Each team is allowed to field seven runners.
Also advancing to the state meet are Pudwill, LaFrance, Doner and Wise.
The 2002 Alaska State Championships will be held Saturday at Michael Janecek Trails at Palmer High School.
