MAT-SU — Wednesday marked the start of the NCAA early signing period for basketball and three Mat-Su Valley athletes made their college futures official.

Wasilla senior Connor Devine signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Division I South Dakota State University, Wasilla senior Alyssa Hutchins committed to Division II UAA and Houston senior Savanna James inked her intent to play at Division II Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D.

Devine continued Wasilla High’s tradition of producing Division I basketball players, with his committement to the Jackrabbits men’s basketball program. He will receive a full-ride and realized a goal he’s had since elementary school.

“I’ve always dreamed about how awesome it would be to play Division I,” Devine said, sporting a gold South Dakota State hooded sweatshirt. “I made it my goal and my dad kept telling me, I’ve got to work hard every day.”

Hutchins, who will also receive a full-ride scholarship, originally wanted to start her college basketball career Outside, but after receiving a surprise phone call from UAA head coach Tim Mosier, the Wasilla senior realized the best opportunity was right in her own back yard.

“Going into the fall, I had no idea she was interested in me,” Hutchins said. “One day he called and offered me a full-ride. Right when he called I knew I wanted to go there.”

James made Houston High history with her commitment. The Hawks senior became the first student-athlete in Houston High history to ink an intent during the NCAA’s early signing period, Houston activities director Norm Bouchard said.

“I feel very blessed,” James said.
