People looking for a bargain or a unique find now have a new place to shop that will not only benefit them, but also have an impact on the community as turn-A-leaf thrift store opened an additional thrift store in Meadow Lakes on Jan. 8.

“Opening this store means that there is more help for our community. It gives us a chance to come to this end of the town and help these people who might not be able to make it all the way to Wasilla,” said store manage LuAnn Rutherford, who previously worked at turn-A-leaf on Yenlo in Wasilla.

This expansion marks a significant milestone for the beloved thrift store, which has been a cornerstone of Wasilla for over 50 years. The first thrift store dates back to 1969, called the “White Elephant”. Since that time the stores are dedicated to providing affordable second-hand items for families and individuals in the Mat-Su Valley.

“This is business growth. Anytime we’re welcoming new businesses to the Valley, we’re growing, and that’s what we’re about,” said Wasilla Chamber of Commerce CEO Jessica Viera after helping cut the ribbon to the new store. “The Chamber is about supporting business and making sure our community is thriving and growing. Every new business we add just helps further that mission.”

The new store, located in the Meadow Lakes City Center, is expected to provide more opportunities for the community to find affordable Thrift Store merchandise.

During the grand opening, shoppers had the opportunity to take advantage of a Dollar Plus Day Sale in which clothing for adults was just $1.00, and children’s clothing .50 each. And as the weather remains unpredictable, outerwear was 50% off.

The thrift store carries everything from to housewares, books to lava lamps. Rutherford assures shoppers that electronics are tested to make sure they are working and there is a wide variety of gently used items for everyone.

The entire staff are eager to welcome new customers and continue the store's tradition of contributing to social good. “We are opening a sister turn-A-leaf thrift store to widen our ability to help more in our community. We look forward to not only seeing our regular customers but also meeting new ones in the Meadow Lakes area,” said Rutherford.

While the Meadow Lakes store doesn’t yet have enough staff to sort items, all donations are carefully sorted at the main Yenlo store to ensure quality sellable merchandise. For people wanting to donate a large quantity or heavy furniture items, please call Tyler at 907-715-7477 to schedule a donation pickup.
