Turnbough shines at regions

Colony's Karri Turnbough was named the most valuable athlete at the Region III track meet in Soldotna last weekend.

Turnbough's 200-meter dash time in the preliminaries of 26.32 seconds set a new region record, beating the old record of 26.44 set by Heather Sorrell of Skyview in 1994.

Turnbough also helped her teammates to all-time region bests in the 800-meter relay and the 400-meter relay. She anchored both races.

The old record in the relays was set by Colony last year. And Turnbough had a hand in those, too.

When all was said and done, Turnbough, a senior, came away with two individual championships and two relay championships. And she helped the Knights win team gold.

She racked up 40 of Colony's 121 overall points.

In the 100-meter dash she ran 13.05.

"She was just a crowd pleaser, it was amazing," said her mother, Sandy Turnbough. "She broke three records, two were her own."

She broke her own in the 100 and 200.

"The 100 is not my race," Turnbough said. "I'm better at the 200 by far. I'm powerful out of the block, but my speed doesn't kick in until 75 meters."

So, Turnbough said, of all the records she broke last weekend, the one she was most proud of was her personal one, in the 100.

She was running with a cold, and against a head wind. She said running in preliminaries one day, and in four events the next is not new to her. Still, her body was tired after the meet.

"My legs felt like rubber," Turnbough said.

She's been doing well this year and she feels as if all the hard work is finally starting to pay off.

"I'm getting better," she said. "But I still feel there's room for improvement."

Turnbough has had about 10 scholarship offers. Her mother said she's decided to accept the one from Valley State University in Valley City, N.D., outside Fargo.

She'd be going on a combination, athletic, academic, and cultural diversity scholarship.

"In the off season Karri swims and runs with the football team. She's one of the only (track athletes) to work out all winter," her father, Rudy Turnbough, said.

She is also meticulous about watching what she eats, Sandy Turnbough said.

About five months before the season starts she cuts out sweets completely — coffee and tea, too.

"She stays away from bread for three days before a meet," Sandy said. "She's real dedicated."

Another dedicated Colony athlete is John Fillman. Fillman, who is always talking about beating his personal best, took gold in the shotput with a throw of 55 feet 25 inches. He also won the discus throw at 154 feet, 10 inches.

Just the week before, he dislocated his finger at the shotput. Afterward he walked quietly away and popped it back in.

"I have a high tolerance to pain," Fillman said.

Fillman will be leaving for the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship in the fall.

Colony's Shelby Bearisto took both the triple jump and the high jump with 31 feet, 7.75 inches and 5 feet, 1 inch, respectively.

And Dominque Colberg won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 23.66 seconds. She brought home second in the 3200-meter and the 1600-meter runs.

Palmer's C.J. Hooker was first in the high jump with 6 feet 3 inches, beating his own record. He took second in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.70 seconds.

The Colony boys won the 800-meter relay. Michael Anderson clocked a time of 51.82 seconds in the 400-meter run, for a first-place finish.

And Colony's Ryan Collins, with a time of 23.10 seconds, tied for first in the 200-meter dash with Kodiak's Joe Robinson.

Coach Cathy Rhodes of Colony was honored as coach of the year.

"The kids performed so well, and the weather was great," Rhodes said. "I think it was the first time they played without rain or sleet. I'm tremendously proud of them."
