Two dead, one critical following head-on crash

WASILLA — Two people are confirmed dead from injuries in a head-on collision that closed down Knik-Goose Bay Road shortly before noon.

Mat-Su Borough Emergency Services Director Dennis Brodigan said the call to responded to Mile 12.3 of the road came in at 11:13 and responders were on scene 10 minutes later. He reported a pickup collided with an SUV.

Brodigan said he doesn't know how many people were in the two vehicles, but he knows of at least four people medics were treating. Two were in critical condition. Rescuers freed a third patient from one of the vehicles shortly after noon. The fourth person was confirmed dead.

A man transported to an Anchorage hospital died later.

“That was a confirmed (fatality) by a civilian who was first on the scene, but then reaffirmed by our first-in responder,” Brodigan said.

One patient in critical condition was being flown to Anchorage, another was being driven to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. A second helicopter arrived on scene at around the time the trapped patient was freed.

Brodigan did not have names of any of the patients, nor could he generally release them due to rules regarding privacy of medical information.

Knik-Goose Bay Road was shut down as responders treated the patients.
