Two Fort Wainwright soldiers were injured when their Army Apache helicopter crashed during a training flight at the Talkeetna airport on Sunday afternoon.
The soldiers, assigned to the 25th Combat Aviation Attack Battalion, were transported from the scene to area medical facilities for treatment, according to a Monday statement from the Army’s 11th Airborne Division. One of the soldiers was flown to a hospital and the other was taken by ambulance.
A division spokesperson says the AH-64 Apache helicopter was one of four that were taking part in the training. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
A Federal Aviation Administration web camera first shows the downed helicopter at the airport at 2:31 p.m.
An army spokesperson said the crash will be investigated by a team from the Army Combat Readiness Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The National Transportation Safety Board will not be investigating the crash because it is in the hands of the military.
This is a developing story.
