Two ways the public can help emergency responders

To the editor:

At this time of year for reflection and thanksgiving, my husband and I are especially appreciative of the emergency services available in the Valley that we needed twice during the past year.

In July, one son severely injured his elbow, and everyone from first responders to the medevac flight crew was fast, skillful and efficient. With a good surgeon and physical therapists (and a lot of luck) thankfully he is making a better than expected recovery.

Then in October, medical emergency services were again needed, but there was nothing they could do for our son. Their kindness to our immediate family at the scene was greatly appreciated, and will long be remembered.

In our travels around the Valley we have noticed two things that everyone can do to help speed emergency service’s response times, which could literally make the difference between life and death.

While driving, always be alert for the flashing red lights and sirens of all types of emergency vehicles and troopers. Quickly move over and stop to give the right-of-way and plenty of maneuvering room. Keep in mind that if there was one vehicle, there is a good possibility one or more emergency vehicles will be right behind it. We also have seen a situation where several emergency vehicles were going one way and a trooper came from the opposite direction answering another call.

At your home (or workplace), be sure the physical location numbers are posted and clearly visible at the start of the driveways or turnoffs. Authorities recommend these numbers be at least five inches tall. Everyone in your family should be very familiar with these vital numbers so that in the panic, fear and confusion of an emergency they can quickly and accurately be provided.

Emergency services respond to many calls every year to all corners of this vast Valley. Anything we can do to help them will be appreciated by the responders, and those in need of help.
