UAF adds Mustang to volleyball program

CHUGIAK — The UAF volleyball program tapped Chugiak High School to find its first in-state recruit of the offseason.

Mustangs standout Emily Moorhead has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the Fairbanks school and play for the Division II Nanooks.

“We had the opportunity to work with Emily in several camps over the last year and loved having her in the gym,” UAF head coach Brian Scott said in a press release issued by the university’s sports information department. “She is passionate about volleyball and has a work ethic to match. We are excited to add her skill and gritty work to our talented group of Nooks.”

The 5-foot-11 Moorhead was a three-year starter at Chugiak, and can play either middle blocker or outside hitter. She was named first-team All-Cook Inlet Conference as a senior, after earned second-team all-conference honors following her junior campaign. Moorhead is also a veteran of the Midnight Sun volleyball program, and a past member of Team Alaska in the 2016 Arctic Winter Games in Greenland, according to the press release.

UAF capped the 2016 season with four Alaskans on the roster — Meagan Olsen (West Valley), Jenna Hickel (Dimond), Ariana Horner (Nome) and Tatum Upchurch (South Anchorage).
