ANCHORAGE — Freshman Jenna Ford and sophomore Morgan Dampier each won events to lead the Wasilla Warriors girls track and field squad to a second-place finish during a 14-team meet at The Dome in Anchorage on Saturday.
Ford, who won a Region III title in cross-country running for the Warriors this past fall, finished first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes of 50 seconds. Ford edged Kenny Lake standout Kailey Wilson in the race and now holds the state’s top time in the event. The freshman also finished third in the 1,600.
Dampier won the 800 for the second time in less than a week. Her time of 2:25.13 was more than five seconds better than second-place Nikki Wray of Dimond. Dampier also won the 800 during a meet at The Dome last Tuesday. In addition to her win, Dampier was second in the 100 and 400, and third in the 200.
Wasilla finished with 58.5 total points, almost half of first-place Dimond’s total, but the Warriors did edge Kenai Central, the defending Northern Lights Conference champions, to take second.
Senior John Knowles swept the throwing events to lead Wasilla to a fifth-place finish in the boys’ standings. Knowles, the defending state champion in the shot put, posted a throw of 50 feet and 11.5 inches to win the shot put. His toss of 159.5 feet left him with first place in the discus. Knowles’ throw in the discus is also the best in the state this season.
Senior Manny Curtis finished second in the high jump for Wasilla.
The Warriors will return to The Dome this weekend to compete in the Big C Relays on Friday and Saturday. Colony, Palmer, Houston and Susitna Valley are also scheduled to compete.
