The September 11th Fund has been established by the United Way, the New York Community Trust and the Council on Federations, and response has been terrific -- including from the Valley.
The purpose of the fund is to mobilize financial resources to respond to the pressing needs of the victims of the recent terrorist attacks on the East Coast, their families and those affected.
"Like all Americans, people in the Mat-Su Valley are asking, 'What can I do?' In fact, they are helping already," said Greg Van Kirk, president of the United Way of Mat-Su. "Through our annual campaign which is currently under way, donors make possible the programs and services that strengthen lives, families and communities year-round. Now these same services will help heal the lives shattered by the recent tragedies."
The fund is a global effort, being coordinated by United Ways across the world.
"In times of crisis, the pressure on existing services is enormous. To respond to the specific needs caused by the attacks, the September 11th Fund gives everyone a chance to contribute above and beyond their current charitable support," said Sammye Pokryfki, executive director of United Way of Mat-Su.
To make a contribution to the fund, interested people may call 1-800-710-8002 or log on to the Web site www.unitedway.org.
Check and money orders are also being accepted by mail at: The September 11th Fund, c/o United Way, 2 Park Ave., New York, N.Y., 10016.
The United Way of Mat-Su office, at 1301 Century Circle, Suite A in Wasilla will serve as the local collection point.
Every penny raised will be used to support needed services for victims and their families.
