I am concerned about Mat-Su Borough Prop. 1, which will be on the ballot Oct. 2. I have been in business in downtown Palmer since 1976. I see Prop. 1 as a real threat to the preservation of our wonderful historic community. This proposition would create a “pay or waive” option for the ordinances that allow us to have a say in how our community will develop.
We were able as residents to have a say and voice our desire for more than a big box when Fred Meyer came to downtown Palmer. The result is an attractive store.
Under Prop. 1, there would not have to be public hearings or public notice for a request to waive a regulation. The governing body would be forced to waive the regulation or use taxpayer money to either pay the perceived decrease in value or hire a lawyer to defend itself.
Prop. 1 is a copy of a law passed in Oregon. It hasn’t worked there and it won’t work in Mat-Su. The question on the ballot is a “yes” or “no” issue. You can’t fine tune the ordinance so we have to vote on what we have in front of us.
Vote “no” on Prop. 1.
