The Trump administration fired U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Linda Lee Fagan, the first female uniformed leader of a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Department of Homeland Security said on January 21.

Admiral Fagan had been nominated by former President Joe Biden to lead the Coast Guard, which is responsible for maritime security, in 2021. She was unanimously confirmed by the Senate and took command in 2022.

The dismissal of Admiral Fagan, came amid a number of leadership personnel moves by the new administration just hours after President Trump’s inauguration.

The Coast Guard falls under the Department of Homeland Security, and Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamin Huffman, posted a message in the Coast Guard's website, confirming the admiral had been relieved of her duties after a "long and illustrious career."

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Huffman, who was appointed to the temporary post hours after the President took office, said he appointed Admiral Kevin Lunday to serve as acting commandant.
