WASILLA — More than a dozen Valley athletes are among 359 competing in the 2014 Arctic Winter Games, which started Sunday in Fairbanks.
Fourteen Valley athletes and one Valley coach are representing the Mat-Su as part of Team Alaska. The games continue through Saturday.
A pair of Wasilla High School hockey players helped the Team Alaska midget hockey squad open the games with a 5-2 win over Nunavut on Monday. WHS junior Tanner Schachle bagged a goal and an assist. WHS freshman Wyatt Monear made 20 saves to earn the win in the Team Alaska net.
Team Alaska plays Team Northwest Territories Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Big Dipper Arena in Fairbanks.
The Team Alaska bantam team, coached by WHS head coach Trent Schachle, debuted late Monday against Team Nunavut. Team Alaska includes the Valley’s Porter Schachle, Braden Brunnhoelzl, Gunnar Stadem and Matthew Bembenek.
A pair of Colony High skiers, Tatjana Spaic and Greta Jenkins, competed in the 5-kilometer freestyle cross-country skiing race at the Birch Hill Recreation Area on Monday. Spaic represented Team Alaska with an eighth-place finish. She finished with at time of 18 minutes and 27 seconds. Jenkins placed 13th with a time of 19:22.
In wrestling, Wasilla’s Caleb Nay split a pair of matches during duals against Team Northwest Territories and Team Alberta Monday.
In girls’ indoor soccer, Wasilla’s Kristina Rice helped Team Alaska beat Team Nunavut 3-1 on Monday.
In short track speed skating, Wasilla’s Sequoia Peterson’s finished fourth in the 777-meter race.
Colony High’s Mackenzie Everett helped Team Alaska open with 2-0 wins over Team Northwest Territories and Yukon.
Palmer’s Misty Wilmart-Agoff and Wasilla’s Robert Strick began Dene games competition Monday.
