Valley baseball teams cap season in state tournaments

After facing conference champions in back-to-back days, and the eventual state champs, Colony settled for fifth in the ASAA/First National Bank Division I State Baseball Championships Saturday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

Cook Inlet Conference champion Eagle River scored an 11-6 win over Colony in the third-place game Saturday. The Knights did score six unanswered runs, but the Wolves jumped to an 11-0 lead in the third.

Boman Marks led Colony with a pair of hits, a run and an RBI. Trey Bailey and Hayden Sherwood also drove in runs.

Sitka, which went on to win the tournament, beat Colony 4-2 in the semifinals. Kaeson Buzby had an RBI. Sherwood and Hudson Boroeder scored runs.

The Knights, the Railbelt Conference champs, opened with a 6-1 win over Dimond. Colony scored all six runs in the sixth. Easton Cook scored on an error to tie the game at 1. Baker gave Colony the lead with a two-run single. Sherman also had a two-run single in the inning. Marks pitched six innings to earn the win.

Wasilla finished 0-2 in the tournament. Eagle River scored a 10-0 win over the Warriors, and Juneau-Douglas edged the Warriors 5-4.

Wasilla rallied with three runs in the sixth, but fell short. Lalo Palomares, Hunter Delcour and Bridger Berta drove in runs. Delcour, Jacob Johnson, Jimmy Lackey and Ramon Guzman scored runs.

Palmer and Houston each finished 0-2 in the Division II state tournament in Kenai.

Kenai opened with a 31-12 victory over the Moose. Homer eliminated Palmer with a 5-2 win. Tristan Barrey and Marques Hall had two runs and two RBI against the Patriots. Avery Shults also drove in two runs. Barrey and Reed Craner scored runs against the Mariners. Mason Miller had an RBI.

Soldotna, which repeated as the Division II state champ, beat Houston 7-4. Kodiak eliminated the Hawks with a 10-3 victory. Ethan Spencer drove in two against the Stars. Sebastian Sanford scored three times. Spencer and Aidan McDonnell had two hits each against Kodiak.
