WASILLA — For the past five years, an ever-growing collection of Mat-Su Valley churches have closed their doors for one Sunday each spring and gathered instead to worship together at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla.
Called “One Lord Sunday,” thousands of worshipers will lift their voices as one in praise to God at 11 a.m., Sunday.
It’s a collaborative effort that has volunteers from various denominations working as parking attendants, staffing the nursery, leading worship and bringing food for the teams.
“When different denominations are seen working together in complete love and unity, it is one of God’s favorite expressions of what he intended his family to look like,” said Kathy Conn, who is helping Valley Pastors Prayer Network organize the event. “Jesus’ dying prayer was that those who would believe on him would be unified as one.”
Valley Pastors Prayer Network is a fellowship of pastors and Christian workers who meet weekly for prayer and fellowship. They meet for one month in each participating church throughout the Valley, Conn said.
One Lord Sunday is just one of the ways participating church communities work together, she said.
This year’s displays by ministries committed to meeting Valley needs has grown from nine to 24, Conn said.
The celebration of faith on Sunday includes full services for children, kids presentations, a multi-church worship team and artists working live during the event.
“One Lord Sunday 2011 promises to be over the top because Valley churches believe that together we make an awesome picture of the body of Christ,” Conn said, hinting at the art project that is part of the service.
For those who are unable to attend in person, the event also will be streamed live on the Internet at onelordsunday.com.
