WASILLA — A day before the start of Alaska’s largest regular season prep wrestling tournament, the Lancer Smith Memorial, the first full Alaska Coaches Wrestling Poll of the season has been released.
A half-dozen Valley wrestlers are ranked as the top grappler currently in their respective weight class on the list compiled by Kenai Central head coach Stan Steffensen.
Wasilla’s Isaiah Elvsaas (138 pounds), Palmer’s Lucas Santana (285), and Colony’s Eric Christy (170) and Caleb Hopkins (182) hold a top spot in the Division I rankings. Redington’s James Paris is listed first at 98 on the Division II list. Palmer’s Teena Nicholia (132) is first on the girls’ list.
The Lancer Smith Memorial, hosted by Palmer High School at the Menard Memorial Sports Center, begins Friday at 9 a.m. The tournament is expected to include athletes from about 60 programs.
