Valley grapplers place in Reno

RENO, Nev. — The Mat-Su Valley’s top wrestlers were in Reno, Nev., this past weekend to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions. More than 20 wrestlers from Palmer, Colony and Wasilla all made the trek down to Reno.

About 80 teams from across the nation competed in a tournament considered to be one the top in the nation, according to its www.rtoc.com.

For Valley teams, the early season tournament is a chance to be tested against some of the best in the nation before setting into home and league schedules.

The tournament is the last high school wrestling action for local teams going into the holiday break.

Top finishers from the Valley were Palmer wrestler Nick Stahler who, after losing in the semifinals in the 140-pound bracket, finished fifth. Colony had a pair of wrestlers place seventh: Kyle Wilson in the 125-pound class and Eric Fan in the 215-pound bracket. Wasilla’s Casey Katchinska finished sixth in the 189-pound weight class.
