MAT-SU — KL3KC Andrew Rose — with the assistance of AL9A Gary Senesac — made his first HF contact on March 31 during the Women in Science event with the Girl Scouts and Matanuska Amateur Radio Association.
KL7MD Mike O’Keefe awarded him a certificate April 15 to commemorate the event.
His QSO — or on air conversation — was with VA7TF Tony Fonseca at 1330 hours UTC at frequency 14.259MHz SSB.
And that’s not all. A few days prior on March 24, Rose took part in his first emergency drill in Talkeetna with the American Red Cross Alaska Chapter and the Upper Susitna Emergency Net, the Mat-Su Valley and Community Emergency Response Team.
Rose is now the youngest certified Community Emergency Response Team member in the state.
Rose also runs Alaska Morning Net one day a week as net control operator and has run the Thursday night ASAN, ARES Net. He is also diligently studying and working toward his general class license.
He is the son of KL2TE Charlotte Rose of Willow and N4WAR Chip of Jesup, Ga. He is the brother of licensed amateur radio operators KI4RVY William of Eastman, Ga., and KL3KB Jennifer of Darien, Ga.
“We are very proud of this young man,” said his mother, Charlotte Rose.
