Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

The Valley Hospital Association, Inc. scholarship program winners were recently announced. Several students from around the Valley earned college tuition through the various programs.
The Annie Demming Scholarship was awarded to Sarah Webb, a Palmer High School graduate. Webb is a student at the University of Alaska Anchorage and Mat-Su College and is enrolled in the prenursing programs. She is interested in nursing and volunteered at Valley Hospital in the emergency room. She said she is interested in working in the Valley as a registered nurse and ultimately becoming a physician.
Her scholarship was worth $3,000.
Another Annie Demming Scholarship was awarded to Aurora Preston, a Colony High School graduate who is attending Oregon State University, where she is starting graduate school. She worked at the VHA pharmacy last summers and is currently working at a lab on campus
She wants to become a pharmacist and would like to make the pharmacy a more interactive part of the hospital, to allow nurses and doctors to make quick decisions about medications.
Her scholarship was worth $2,000.
Christina Lien, a Palmer High School graduate, was the recipient of a $2,000 Vivian Shaver Scholarship. She completed a certified nursing assistant course while attending high school, and would like to become a doctor in the future. Her cumulative grade-point average is 3.975.
Sianna Garrod was awarded a $3,000 Vivian Shaver Scholarship. She is a Colony High School graduate who will be attending Gonzaga University. Her goal is to become a pediatric oncologist and return to Alaska to set up a mentorship program where students with aspirations of becoming doctors can meet with practicing physicians to see what it really means to be a doctor. Garrod maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
