To the editor:
I had the opportunity this past week to spend two days at the Capitol in Juneau. I had meetings with legislators regarding a community project we are trying to accomplish. I learned a couple of important things.
There is an element of positive stress in the building. The Legislature is working diligently on critical long-term issues for Alaska, with no simple solutions. The next important element I learned was that considerably less discretionary funds are available in the proposed budget compared to prior years.
I may not have been successful in effectively advocating for our community project, especially because of the scarce financial resources available. However, please know our Mat-Su legislative delegation is working incredibly hard on all the paramount issues. In my opinion, the Valley delegation is working as a team like I have not seen before. Our delegation’s extraordinary efforts also include important and powerful leadership positions: president of the Senate, co-chairs of several committees and other important roles.
Thank you to our legislative delegation for all their exemplary focus and teamwork.
