Valley Performing Arts auditions for ‘God's Favorite’

WASILLA — Valley Performing Arts is auditioning actors for five male roles and three female roles in its upcoming comedy “God’s Favorite.”

Auditions are from 1 to 4 p.m., Oct. 22 and from 4 to 7 p.m., Oct. 23 at the Fred and Sara Machetanz Theatre, 251 West Swanson, in Wasilla. Download the audition form at valleyperformingarts.org.

Julie McCartney will direct the performance, which is loosely based on the Biblical Book of Job. Emanuel Azenberg produced the play on Broadway in 1974.

McCartney, a science teacher at Wasilla High School, also directed the VPA production of “The Drunkard” and won VPA awards for Best Lighting Design for her work on “Beauty and the Beast” and “Spitfire Grill.”

“God’s Favorite” takes place in a Long Island mansion where a pious, God-fearing tycoon named Joe Benjamin dwells with his long-suffering wife, Rose, a prodigal son, David, a pair of kooky twins, Ben and Sarah, and the maid and butler, Mady and Morris.

One night a messenger from God, Sidney Lipton (with a big G on his sweatshirt) arrives and, as in the biblical story, goes through all manner of temptations to get Joe Benjamin to renounce God. When he refuses, he is visited by all the afflictions imaginable. He stands firm and the messenger has to admit defeat.

“The Woman In Black” plays through Oct. 30 and “A Christmas Carol” opens Nov. 18.

Tickets are available online at valleyperformingarts.org or by calling VPA at 373-0195.
