WASILLA — Valley Performing Arts members are putting on a local adaption of “The Wild Women of Winedale” through March 26.
This is the final weekend of theater performances at the VPA facility in downtown Wasilla. Performances start at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Dinner theater performances will be held at Evangelo’s from March 17 through March 26.
Longtime VPA member, Dave Nufer is directing “The Wild Women of Winedale.” He said they had a successful opening weekend and he’s eager to keep the positive momentum going. He said the comedic story with high-energy performances is sure to get a laugh out of anyone who watches their play.
“It’s going really well. People like it. They’re laughing and they’re having a good time,” Nufer said.
“The Wild Women of Winedale” features a cast of nine women from across the Valley. Nufer said there’s several first time actors playing off the energy of seasoned VPA veterans. He said that everyone in the cast is pouring their hearts into their performances and it’s evident in the final product.
“If you don’t laugh at what they’re doing, something’s wrong,” Nufer said.
Nufer has been involved with about 25 VPA productions and this is the sixth show he’s directed. He said that he’s constantly blown away by the sheer amount of local talent in the Valley and that’s reflected in his current cast and crew.
“It is unreal,” Nufer said.
“The Wild Women of Winedale” is one of the last shows of VPA’s 45th season. Nufer said that he was thankful to return to live theater after a prolonged hiatus due to the pandemic.
“It’s a fantastic thing that we have our season going, and we look forward to building from here,” Nufer said. “I think the number of people that came out to audition for all of our plays this year shows that people did miss it.”
Community theater has been a big part of Nufer’s life since 2007. He said that VPA is a fun, safe, and encouraging atmosphere for actors of all ages and backgrounds.
“I think it’s a place where you can be whatever you want to be,” Nufer said. “There’s just a lot of joy in that for me.”
