Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

ANCHORAGE — A number of Valley players stood out during the annual Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches Senior All-Star Games last week.
A dozen local players played in the games, which were hosted by Soldotna High last Thursday and Grace Christian School in Anchorage last Saturday.
Palmer senior Kasara Brandenburg recorded 15 points in each of the girls’ games to help Team Gold score a series split. Brandenburg scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds during an 87-76 win over Team Blue at Grace. Wasilla senior Alyssa Hutchins hit a trio of three-pointers and scored 17 for Team Gold during the win. Hutchins also dished off five assists in the victory. Colony’s Saige Stefanski added eight points for Team Gold and Su Valley’s Sierra Pedersen chipped in two points.
Houston senior Savanna James scored 10 points for Team Blue in the loss and Wasilla’s Pherrari Brumbaugh added two points and two rebounds.
James and Brumbaugh helped Team Blue score a 73-70 win at Soldotna. James scored nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the victory. Brumbaugh added two points and three rebounds.
Brandenburg had 15 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Hutchins had five, Stefanski had four points and seven rebounds, while Pedersen chipped in three points.
In boys’ action, Wasilla’s Conner Devine collected 14 points and 10 rebounds in Team Blue’s 86-64 win over Team Gold at Soldotna. Wasilla’s Braydon Kuiper added 13 points and seven rebounds. Houston’s Scott Kramer had seven points in the win. Wasilla’s Dillon Ferro finished with a pair of assists.
Palmer’s Jared Straight and Houston’s Hunter Pease played for Team Gold.
Straight scored seven points during Team Gold’s 92-90 win over Team Blue at Grace Christian. Pease had four points.
Devine had nine points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Kuiper finished with nine points, Kramer had six and Ferro chipped in three.
