Colony back on track

The Colony Knights visited Eielson Friday night and came away with a 35-0 win over the Ravens, posting their first win of the season.

Defense and penalties kept the score low through three quarters, then the Knights opened the game up in the fourth quarter by taking advantage of Raven turnovers.

The Knight defense came prepared for Eielson's heavy running game, primarily from junior tailback Kenji Badger. The Knights held him to 36 yards on 21 carries.

With the running game shut down, the Ravens put the ball in the air. Colony's staunch defense was prepared for that too as it intercepted the ball four times, enabling the offense to put points on the board.

Junior running back Augie Manelick rushed for 112 yards on 15 carries, scoring two of the Knights' touchdowns.

Colony plays again Friday at home against Lathrop.

Wasilla rips North Pole at home

The Wasilla Warriors flexed their weapons again this week with a 59-0 drubbing of the North Pole Patriots Friday night in Wasilla.

The Warrior ground attack, led by Lafe Martyn's 114 yards and Travis Dutcher's 100 yards provided all the offense the Warriors needed for victory. Dutcher rushed for three touchdowns in the game.

Wasilla had intended to mix in more passes during the game, but they didn't want to run up the score.

Starting quarterback Jake Carney did manage to throw two touchdown passes in the limited time he was in the game, one to Travis Webb and another to Cody Shierman.

Wasilla's next game is Saturday at West Valley.

Houston falls hard against Nikiski

Houston's trip to Nikiski to take on the defending small-school champs fell short of expectations as the Bulldogs thrashed the visiting Hawks 51-7 Saturday night.

"We were out-muscled on the offensive and defensive lines," said Houston head coach Mat Bredberg. "They were able to take advantage of their bigger size."

The Hawks lone touchdown came when Brett Erickson caught a 2-yard pass from Peter Clemens.

Houston is off to an 0-2 start this year, losing to a good Kenai team and ever-dominent Nikiski. Nikiski has never lost a Greatland conference game.

Houston hopes to rebound Saturday at home against Sitka.
