Valley prep football players named all-state

After capping his career and school record-breaking senior season and state title win over rival Houston, quarterback Wayde Bowman was quick to credit his team.

“It’s a team effort at the end of the day,” Bowman said. “Without the line, the coaches, nothing would be possible.”

Weeks after earning the ASAA Division III state title, their first in school history, the Huskies, as a team, continue to garner accolades.

Redington’s Jaden Spaulding was named the Division III offensive player of the year. Mason Brouillet earned lineman of the year honors. Huskies mentor Mathias Weinberger was named the state coach of the year.

Brouillet and teammate Samuel MacDonald were named to the first team on both the offensive and defensive line. Both blocked for Redington’s school-record setting offense that included Spaulding (first-team running back), Bowman (first-team quarterback) and Logan Seymore (first-team wide receiver).

Bowman is the first Mat-Su quarterback to throw for more than 2,000 yards passing in a season. The senior finished with 2,265 yards passing, 32 touchdown passes and a 63.8 completion percentage. Spaulding finished with 1,551 total yards from scrimmage and 25 total touchdowns.

Trevor Bowman (defensive back) and Dallas Mattson (utility player) were also named to the first team.

The Houston Hawks also received a pair of major awards. Kiderro Fono was named the Division III defensive player of the year and defensive coordinator Dave Reilly was named the assistant coach of the year.

Fono was named to the first team on both the offensive and defensive lines. Clinton Curren (center), Siu Sasiu (guard), Branden Hina (linebacker), Keldin Nicol (linebacker) and Eric Proboski (defensive back) were also named to the first team.

Bryce Murdock (wide receiver), Pomai Vargas (linebacker) and Spaulding (return specialist) earned second-team all-state honors.

Five Valley players were named to the first team on the Division II all-state list. Wasilla wide receiver Dylan Jeffus, defensive back Tim Grisso and kicker Jadon Sheveland were named to the team. Offensive lineman Cal Tipton and Parker Glastetter represented Palmer on the first team.

Palmer’s Elijah Barnes (wide receiver, defensive back and return specialist) and Hayden Buckley (defensive line), and Wasilla’s Payson White (defensive line) were named to the second team.

Colony’s Daniel Van Slyke was named Division I all-state on the offensive line. Tanner Thornhill (running back and linebacker), Jayce Underwood (wide receiver and defensive back), Spencer Lagg (tight end and defensive end) and Jack Nash (defensive back) were named to the second team for the Knights.
