Valley skiers compete in Region III championships

Valley cross-country skiers met in Nikiski last Friday and Saturday to compete in the Region III championships.

Su Valley's Tazlina Mannix won the girls' 7K freestyle race Friday and finished second in Saturday's 5K classic race to win the girls' overall championship. Su Valley finished third in team results with a two-day team combined time of 2 hours, 45 minutes and 45 seconds -- just 42 seconds behind second-place Homer. Skyview won the girls team championship with a time of 2:42:13. Mannix was named girls' individual best skier for the region championships and the season overall.

Colony's Ross Wise finished fifth in Friday's boys' 10K freestyle race with teammate Jeff Warner finishing sixth. Warner took third in Saturday's 7K classic race with Wise finishing fourth. The performances earned Warner fourth-place in the overall results and Wise fifth. Colony skiers combined to take second-place in the boys' team results behind Soldotna.

Su Valley coach Karen Mannix was voted Region III coach of the year during the championships.
