Valley skiers score top-10 finishes at state meet

WASILLA — A trio of Valley skiers earned top 10 finishes in the skimeister standings during the first two days of the ASAA/First National Cup Nordic Ski State Championships at Kincaid Park in Anchorage.

Colony senior Tracen Knopp led all Valley skiers with a sixth-place finish in the boys’ class of the skimeister standings, which combines the times in the classic and freestyle races. Knopp finished with a two-day total of 45 minutes, 45 seconds. Knopp placed fifth in the 7.5-kilometer classic Thursday and was 13th in the 10-kilomter freestyle on Friday.

Palmer’s Josiah Alverts was ninth in the boys’ standings with a two-day total of 45:59.

Alverts finished 12th in the classic and fifth in the freestyle.

Both Knopp and Alverts earned Region III titles last week. Knopp was first in the classic race, and Alverts finished first in the freestyle.

Colony sophomore Annika Hanestad led Valley skiers with a 10th-place finish in the girls’ class, and a two-day combined time of 36:50. Hanestad was eighth in the freestyle and 12th in the classic.

The state meet continues with the relays on Saturday.
