PALMER — A number of Valley athletes from Colony High, Palmer High and Glacier View School traveled with the Alaska Volleyball Association to participate in the National Volleyball Festival in Phoenix, Ariz., late last month.
Palmer’s Lily Cullers and Glacier View’s Allison Ruisch represented the Valley on U17 team. Colony’s Mackenzie Everett joined Palmer’s Brecken Rieken, Brooke Nezaticky, Elliot Perkins, Macey Buresh, Cassidy Giese and Mariah McNamara on the U16 squad.
Led by Cullers and Ruisch, the AVA U17 started the event ranked 62nd and moved up to 45th, winning the Commendation Division to earn a trophy. Cullers was the team’s top passer and digger.
The U16 team finished 7-4 in the tournament to move up from a ranking of 93rd to 55.
The festival was a weeklong tourney featured 6,000 athletes from 550 teams from a dozen states and six countries.
Athletes from Chugiak, Bartlett, West Anchorage, Skyview and Eagle River were also on the team.
