Colony girls fifth in state

The Colony girls placed fifth at the 2003 state swimming and diving championships at Bartlett High last weekend.

Sarah Brettrager led the Knights with a pair of top finishes. Brettrager finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.71 and finished fifth in the 100 freestyle.

Elise Long, Nancy Long and Emily Whistine also had fifth place finishes in the final round.

Elise Long finished fifth in the 200 freestyle, Nancy Long placed fifth in the 500 freestyle and Whistine finished fifth in the 1-meter diving.

Warriors win

Chugiak Invite

The Wasilla Warriors won the Bob Bailey Invitational at Chugiak High School last weekend.

The Warriors earned 160.5 points to win the first major 4A wrestling tournament of the season.

Leading the Warriors was Chris Odom, who pulled off a slim 11-9 win over Palmer's Zack Tomco to win the tourney championship at 135 pounds. Tomco was the top seed in the tournament.

Alan Bartelli and Jeremy Meisler also won titles for Wasilla.

Bartelli pinned Service's Ross Elden in 59 seconds to win at 103. Meisler pinned Skyview's Joel Morse at the 2:33 mark.

Jake Wade dropped arguably the closest match of the finals. Dimond's Keenen Chirhart needed overtime to defeat Wade 7-5 in the 189-pound class.

Chirhart was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

Other top finishers for Wasilla included Chuck Carpenter who placed second at 152.

Palmer, led by a pair of individual titles, placed seventh in the team standings with 91.5 points.

Trevor Pempeck defeated Chugiak's Dan Bailey 8-2 to win the 145-pound crown.

Willie Ratcliffe pinned Dimond's Marcus Lopez to win the 171-pound title.

Lopez was the top seed of the bracket.

Colony finished 11th in the tourney with 64.5 points.

Hollan Gravely won the Knights' lone individual title with a technical fall over Chugiak's Sam Carlson in the 112-pound final.
