Valley squad eliminated from state tourney

ANCHORAGE — There was a late Valley rally, but the American Legion baseball season came to an end for a Mat-Su team Thursday afternoon.

The Kenai Twins used a 6-3 win over Valley Post 35/15 to eliminate the Mat-Su squad during the third day of the Alaska American Legion State Baseball Championships at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Valley combined team, which features players from Wasilla Post 35 and Palmer Post 15, scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to cut Kenai’s lead in half. Matthew Palmer, Blake Marks and Cooper McLaughlin each scored runs as the Valley tried to rally. McLaughlin, Dalton McHugill and Joshua Finch had the RBIs.

Buddy Dale led the Valley with three hits.

The Valley team opened tourney play with a 3-0 win over Dimond Tuesday. McHugill tossed a two-hit complete game shutout. He also fanned eight during the victory. Dale finished 3 for 5 at the plate, with an RBI. Logan Sanders had two hits. Marks and McHugill also drove in runs.

Chugiak bounced the Valley team into the loser’s bracket Wednesday with a 7-3 victory during the second round. The Mat-Su scored finished with only five hits.
