Valley squads sweep swim titles at Vadlez Invite

VALDEZ ¬— The Palmer Moose won their first team title of the season, finishing first in girls standings of the Valdez Invitational Saturday in Valdez.

The Moose finished with 88 total points to edge runner-up Valdez. Palmer also helped ensure a Valley sweep of the team standings. Colony continued its stellar run on the boys’ side, finishing first in the boys’ team standings.

Sarah Hanson scored individual gold twice and helped Palmer win the 400-yard freestyle relay event. Hanson finished first in the 50 freestyle, clocking a time of 27.66 seconds. She also won the distance race, finishing first in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 6:02.72. Millie Snelders also had a win, finishing first in the 100 freestyle.

Snelders and Hanson combined with Rachel Hanson and McKenzie Musgrave to win the 400 freestyle for the Moose.

Colony and Wasilla finished third and fourth in the girls’ team standings. Camille Dayton won the 100 backstroke for Colony.

The Knights boys finished with 116 points in the team standings, nearly 50 ahead of runner-up Palmer.

Zach Bloom and Elliot Amato each won a pair of events for the Knights. Bloom finished first in the 200 individual medley, with a time of 2:02.35. He was also first in the 500 freestyle, with a mark of 4:56.89. Amato was the winner in the 200 freestyle (2:00.91) and 100 freestyle (53.62).

Bloom and Amato were among five Knights to win at least one event. Isaiah Tira (50 freestyle), Cameron Gossett (100 butterfly) and Joesph Anderson (1:03.04) also finished first for the Knights.

Bloom, Anderson, Amato and Jake Simmons combined to win the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay for the Knights.

Max Snelders led Palmer to a second-place finish in the team standings with his win in the 100 backstroke.

Wasilla was third in the team standings.

Later this month, Valley swimmers will compete in the three-day Valley Invitational, which starts Oct. 16 at the Palmer Pool.
