Valley squads win Wasilla Invite

WASILLA — Valley runners enjoyed their final tune-up prior to the upcoming Region III Championships during the Wasilla Invitational Saturday in Talkeetna.

Wasilla senior Allison VanPelt and Colony sophomore Lane Meier scored individual wins, and the Colony boys and Palmer girls notched team titles during the final regular season meet of the season. VanPelt, who owns the top Region III girls time this season, finished first in the girls’ race with a mark of 19 minutes, 14 seconds. Meier earned his first career varsity win with a time of 17:04.

Sophomore Sophie Wright helped Palmer win the girls team title, finishing as the runner-up with a mark of 20:49. Wright was also one of three Moose to finish in the top 5. Lydia Ortiz (21:19) was third and Sophia Nowers (21:42) placed fifth. Junior Sofija Spaic led the Colony girls’ with a fourth-place finish and time of 21:42.

Meier was one of two Knights to finish in the boys’ top 5. Junior Gavin Block (17:34) finished fourth. Senior Connor Owens (17:31) led Palmer with a third-place finish. Junior Hunter Hayes led Wasilla with a fifth-place finish and time of 17:43.
